Speicherstadt Hamburg - a photo on Flickriver

            Die Speicherstadt in Hamburg ist der größte auf Eichenpfählen gegründete Lagerhauskomplex der Welt und steht seit 1991 unter Denkmalschutz. Sie wurde ab 1883 als Teilstück des Hamburger Freihafens erbaut, der erste Abschnitt war 1888 fertiggestellt. Die Bauleitung hatte der Oberingenieur der Hamburger Baudeputation Franz Andreas Meyer, ihm zur Seite standen der Wasserbaudirektor Christian Nehls und der Baudirektor Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann sowie ein Konsortium aus 15 Ingenieuren, 24 Architekten und Bauzeichnern. Seit dem 1. Januar 2003 ist die Speicherstadt aus dem Gebiet des Freihafens herausgenommen, zum 1. März 2008 wurde sie verwaltungsrechtlich mit dem Neubebauungsgebiet auf dem Großen Grasbrook zum Stadtteil HafenCity im Bezirk Hamburg-Mitte erklärt.

The Speicherstadt (lit. city of warehouses, meaning warehouse district) in Hamburg, Germany is the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations, oak logs, in this particular case. It is located in the port of Hamburg—within the HafenCity quarter—and was built from 1883 to 1927.

The district was built as a free zone to transfer goods without paying customs. As of 2009 the district and the surrounding area is under redevelopment.
