L2020_5171-2 - Chirk Tunnel - Llangollen Canal (Explored)

View towards the northern portal of Chirk Tunnel.

Chirk Tunnel was constructed between 1795 and 1802 and as with Whitehouse Tunnel is provided with a tow path obviating the need for crews to leg boats through the tunnel.

Chirk Tunnel is 421 metres (460 yd) long and the tunnel is straight enough to be able to see if a boat is already inside the tunnel. The tunnel, the tunnel portals and the Chirk canal basin are collectively a Grade II* listed structure.
