J20171114-0017—Opuntia chlorotica—RPBG—DxO

            Opuntia chlorotica—pancake cactus. A prickly pear found in the desert mountains of both the Mohave and Coloradan deserts of Cailifornia, thence east to Nevada, Arizona and extreme southwestern New Mexico.  It also grows in Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur in Mexico.  O. chloriotica may be as spiny as the specimen shown or have almost no spines.  Painful glochids are almost always present.  The species is difficult to grow in gardens.  Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
