Sweetgum - a photo on Flickriver

Sweetgum

            Liquidambar styraciflua is one of the most common trees around here. It is capable of attaining very large size, especially in its "favored" habitats, which seem to be floodplains. It is a rapid colonizer of old fields. The corky growth on the branches is highly variable in terms of expression. This corky growth frequently tricks beginning botanists, who sometimes think that it's winged elm, Ulmus alata. The two species can grow in the same areas, and have the same stature, but the buds are very different: sweetgum has relatively large, shiny, green/reddish buds, whereas winged elm has small buds that are dull brown.
