a view from avery peak, bigelow range, maine

            a fine memorial weekend hike in northwestern maine.  the black flies were out in force, and trails were muddy after a rainy spring, but we had a wonderful day.  the clouds lifted and the sun came out over the course of the day.  

here we are looking east toward little bigelow from avery peak, the more easterly of bigelow mountain's twin summits. 

the appalachian trail runs over the bigelow range, where hikers are rewarded with magnificent views of flagstaff lake and nearby peaks.  it won't be long before the faster south-bound AT thru-hikers appear in the bigelows, making their pilgrimage to the southern terminus in georgia.  

bigelow mountain's summits, west peak and avery peak, at 4,145' and 4,090' are #43 and #47 respectively on the list of new england's 67 4,000'+ peaks.  the nearby south horn at 3,805' is #89 on the "new england hundred highest."
