The castle Ottenstein - a photo on Flickriver

            The castle Ottenstein is a hill castle in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria and stands on a hill above the reservoir Ottenstein. It is often referred to as Ottenstein Castle.

One of the Ottensteiner was Hugo de Ottenstaine, who was first mentioned in 1177. The castle itself should be older. The Ottensteiner were related to the lords of Rauheneck near Baden. The castle was owned until the first half of the 15th century.

As owner followed a Tobias von Rohr, who was captured because of his encroachments in 1448 after a siege of the castle. Later, the Lords of Rohr were in the service of Matthias Corvinus. In 1516 the castle came into the possession of Paul Stodoligk. Under his son Eustach many alterations, such as the outer bailey, were carried out. In 1536 she was sold to the Lamberg family and was in their possession for over 400 years. The Lambergs were raised in 1544 in the baron and led the name Barons von Ortenegg and Ottenstein. In 1667 they became counts.

Twice the castle was besieged in the Thirty Years' War, both times, 1622 and 1640, unsuccessful.
