Happy New Year to everyone!

17th December 2023 turned out to be a good day for phenomena in the sky. First up were the nacreous clouds. I don't remember seeing those colourful and beautiful clouds before.

Early in the evening the aurora index turned red so off I was to a local but quite remote beach. There was excitement and anticipation in the air when I approached the place but somehow I had underestimated the amount of snow on the ground. Crescent moon provided little light as I crawled my way on the beach.

Snow had also covered most of the rocks I had planned as foreground but luckily the auroras themselves put on a very nice display. Eventually I found a somewhat pleasing composition, too. A great surprise were the "dunes", a horizontal form of aurora discovered only recently by Finnish aurora enthusiasts.

The temperature was not very low but soon the strong wind and snow in my shoes sent me back to car. Back at home it was nice to have a warm drink and inspect the day's photo haul. So ended another eventful day in nature.
