Malignant

            It started out with an unusual pain
Deep inside a place of your body you didn’t even know existed
As if you were an astronaut discovering a hidden planet
or a black hole you could imagine sinking your fingers into.

Don’t worry it’s nothing, they said.
You’re just over-reacting 
You’re not the expert on your own need
For self determination

And so it metastasized
Across the varying states
of consciousness and existence 
Until it grew completely out of control

It takes over like a cancer only knows how to do
and pretty soon you will ask who will survive
and what will be left of us?
As it spreads and infects each part of the whole.

You’re just a black spot on humanity
And you’re changing the way 
We’re able to make a choice
To determine what happens to ourselves. 

Sometimes you skip a few doctor’s visits or protests and then you’re just doomed.
