Southern 4501 2-8-2 Mikado - a photo on Flickriver

            Seen here on a Southern Fan excursion rocking Spring City Tennessee. No matter what its maintenance and financial drawbacks were, to a viewer, you just can't beat it. would rather watch steam than diesel. Oh well, since I remember steam operations, I guess I am just old. Not quite as old as 4501.

This 1911 graduate of Baldwin Locomotive works had a 200 PSI boiler pressure, 63 inch drivers and 27 x 30 in pistons. It was the first in a line of 182 Ms class 2-8-2 Mikados ordered and used by Southern. It is currently owned by the Tennesse Valley Railroad Museum and undergoing restoration for service.
