20220224-DSC_7051 - Greater Scaup

            Having an insatiable appetite for zebra mussels has led to a huge increase in the numbers of Greater Scaup in our Great Lakes. Lake Ontario is a winter home to a number of diving duck species like the Redhead, Long-tailed Ducks, Common Goldeneyes and now they are being joined by large rafts of Greater Scaups. When actively migrating this species is abundant throughout Ontario.
When both the Greater Scaup and Lesser Scaup raft together they will segregate by species within the flock.
The drake Greater Scaup can be identified by his dark iridescent green head that often looks black pending lighting conditions.
This pair of drakes do a fly by to exercise their wings.
