Galileo's Tomb

            In 1564, Michelangelo was taken to the heavens while Galileo Galilei was born to study them.  From 1564 to 1642, Galileo left his mark in the fields of Astronomy and Geometry - represented by the two females on either side of his tomb - but also physics, engineering and philosophy.  Convicted by the Catholic Church for "vehement suspicion of heresy" for his heliocentric theories, Galileo's tomb and funerary monument looked nothing like this after his death in 1642.  The Grand Duke Ferdinando II insisted he be buried in the main body of Santa Croce but Pope Urban VIII would not allow it and instead buried him in a small room in a corner of the church.  Almost 100 years later, his body was removed and buried under this newly erected mausoleum as the Catholics had finally embraced their convicted son.  At the time of disinterment, three fingers and a tooth were removed from the body and are now on display at Museo Galileo in Florence.
