Birmingham Selly Oak Summer 1974

            Selly Oak Station, opened in 1876 on the Midland Railway's Birmingham and West Suburban Branch, sees an unidentified Peak diesel heading south with a Bristol cross-country service through the decaying station buildings. This was the service I used to take from Sheffield to Birmingham New Street on my odyssey to Aberystwyth in the late-60s. In 1974 I was at Birmingham University and occasionally took a train into New Street - the University station was still 4 years away.

The coaches are crossing the Bristol Road overbridge & the engine is working hard as it climbs towards the south Birmingham suburbs. The station was still open but, typically for British Railways, the buildings had been left to rot until there was no option but to demolish them which they duly did. The replacement station on the cross-town electrified services is a red-brick affair with none of the character of this original building.
