Orang-utan Blues

In the previous black and white image of an orang-utan we saw that they are the most solitary of the great apes. We know that they are among the most seriously endangered creatures on earth. And here is something else that we MUST know:

"Orangutans are among the most intelligent primates. They use a variety of sophisticated tools and construct elaborate sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. The apes' learning abilities have been studied extensively. There may be distinctive cultures within populations. Orangutans have been featured in literature and art since at least the 18th century, particularly in works which comment on human society. Field studies of the apes were pioneered by primatologist Birutė Galdikas and they have been kept in captive facilities around the world since at least the early 19th century. All three orangutan species are considered critically endangered. Human activities have caused severe declines in populations and ranges. Threats to wild orangutan populations include poaching, habitat destruction because of palm oil cultivation, and the illegal pet trade. Loss of the rainforest habitat is the primary reason for their demise. To think that we could do this to one of our closest relatives, in the knowledge now that these beautiful creatures understand exactly their condition, is a truly frightening thought. My photograph is designed to do several things. The quality of light was poor in this section of the zoo that is built to replicate part of a rainforest. So that meant deliberately overexposing the shot to make sure this orang-utan itself was captured properly. I wanted to place the orang-utan in its present context, alone on a constructed platform, since they are solitary creatures. Enlarge the shot and look into its face. The background is desaturated to amplify the effect of the red hair that covers its body.

My title is a combination of two things: (1) The orang-utan looks somewhat depressed - for such an intelligent creature, how can we be surprised; (2) In Australian slang the term "blue" is often used when referring to a person with red hair. So "Orang-utan Blues" it is.
