Cliffhangers - a photo on Flickriver

Cliffhangers

            These are not abuntant around here, but I always find a few of these "golf tee" or "trumpet" lichen growing each winter. These were clinging to the edge of log washed up into a salt water marsh. They are about 20mm tall.

Lichens are a complex life form that is a symbiotic partnership of fungus and algae.
