Pest House

In April 1760, the Town Meeting authorized the Selectmen to purchase a nine-acre plot and to “build a Pest House on the same for the Town’s use and the Town’s cost.” It is noted on December 9, 1760—eight days after his Capt. Scranton's demise—that the Town voted once again to “build a Pest House to put said persons in as are suspected to have taken the infection of Smallpox.”
The Madison Historical Society sponsors an annual public walk to the "pock lot" off of Tanner Marsh Road and the nearby "Pest House" in Guilford, CT. Here's how it was on April 8, 2017. See madisonhistory.org/smallpox-burying-ground/ for more info about the Pock Lot.
