Power to the tower

            37894 struggles up the last few yards to the loading point at Tower Colliery with 7C87, a train of empties from Aberthaw.

The train is travelling on former Vale of Neath Railway metals, which was a broad gauge route built between Merthyr Tydfil to Neath.    

Interestingly, the route through from Aberdare ran as mixed gauge from 1863 until 1872.

Coal traffic from Tower Colliery finally finished in 2017.   In 2022 the railway here is still in place but disused.    The Welsh Government aspires to re-open the line for passenger use from Aberdare to a new station at Hirwaun.
