Douglas SBD-2 Dauntless (Dive Bomber) - Pacific Aviation Museum - National Pearl Harbor Day of Remembrance

            The Battle of Midway was a major naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that took place 4–7 June 1942, six months after the Empire of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea. The U.S. Navy under Admirals Chester W. Nimitz, Frank J. Fletcher, and Raymond A. Spruance defeated an attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy under Admirals Isoroku Yamamoto, Chūichi Nagumo, and Nobutake Kondō north of Midway Atoll, inflicting devastating damage on the Japanese fleet. Military historian John Keegan called it "the most stunning & decisive blow in the history of naval warfare", while naval historian Craig Symonds called it "one of the most consequential naval engagements in world history, ranking alongside Salamis, Trafalgar, & Tsushima Strait, as both tactically decisive & strategically influential."

The Douglas SBD Dauntless (like the one seen in the photograph above from the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum) is a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the United States Navy's main carrier-based scout/dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944. The SBD was also flown by the United States Marine Corps, both from land air bases and aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bomber that delivered the fatal blows to the Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, six months after Pearl Harbor. The type earned its nickname "Slow But Deadly" (from its SBD initials and its flying 'style') during this period, along with a rarely-used accompanying nickname of "Furious D."

Today, December 7th, on the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor Attack, we remember the 2,008 sailors that were killed and 710 others that were wounded; the 218 soldiers and airmen (who were part of the Army prior to the independent United States Air Force in 1947) that were killed and the 364 that were wounded; the 109 Marines that were killed and the 69 that were wounded; and the 68 civilians that were killed and the 35 that were wounded. (In total, 2,403 Americans were killed, and 1,178 were wounded.) Additionally, eighteen U.S. ships were sunk or run aground, including five battleships, and 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed and another 159 damaged. These men and women who died in the service of their country are true American heroes deserving of this day at bare minimum and daily remembrance at best as we all remember the day deemed by then U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt as "a date which will live in infamy". May they each rest in peace!
