Leeds_ West_ Gantry_ 6_2001

            The infamous “Gantry 6” on the west approach to Leeds station in 2001. Constructed as part of the Leeds 1st station remodelling project on which I was the main signalling contractors "Contract Engineer" This gantry looked relatively straight forward on the signalling plan, however resolving the conflicts between the various curved approaches to the gantry and the overhead line small steel work, such that a train driver could actually identify and see the signal that applied to him as he approached proved to be major issue. This photograph was taken after the first attempt to improve the situation with the red aspects now staggered and line identification signs added. The gantry would undergo a number of further modifications over the next few months including replacing the multi-aspect signal heads with searchlights.
