Rainbow Trout - Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792) [more of this species]

The Rainbow Trout is a type of Pacific Salmon which naturally occurs on the northern pacific, but has also been introduced to most parts of the world as a sport and food fish.

They are best identified by the a pink stripe which runs along the its body and pink cheeks. This is more prominent in breeding fish and less prominent when they are sea run, during which time they are called steelheads.

In many areas of the world they live in the same habitat as brown trout and they can be identified from brown trout by having spots that run all the way into the tail.
