The Ancient Village of Hathersage - a photo on Flickriver

            Hathersage is a village and civil parish in England's Peak District National Park. It lies in the Hope Valley, slightly to the north of the River Derwent, approximately 10 miles south-west of the city of Sheffield.

The history of the village goes back a long way: Mesolithic microliths have been found nearby indicating ancient occupation of the area; there is evidence of a Bronze Age field system, settlement and burial cairn; and there are remains of a Romano British settlement, possibly a farmstead. The Domesday Book records that in 1066 Hathersage was held by two brothers, and that by 1086, the population was 8 villagers and 2 smallholders.

During the industrial revolution, Hathersage became an important centre for the manufacture of millstones, needles and pins. The village grew in size and, by the time of the last census of 2011, the population had grown to 1433. Owing to its natural geology, the area is also now home to the UK's biggest cement factory (visible in the top right of the photo). It is somewhat infamous locally because it's a prominent industrial operation in the middle of a National Park and is very visible from many locations. However, the factory provides valuable local employment outside the tourism sector.

Hathersage has now become a popular place to visit for those in search of legendary heroes and literary heroines. By the south door of the church of St Michael is the grave of Robin Hood's lieutenant, Little John, who was reputedly born in the village. St Michael's Church spire can be seen in the photo just below right of centre. Nearby there are more sites associated with the outlaw - Robin Hood's Cross on Abney Moor, Robin Hood's Stoop on Offerton Moor, and Robin Hood's Cave on Stanage Edge.

In 1845, Charlotte Brontë stayed at the Hathersage vicarage, visiting her friend Ellen Nussey, whose brother was the vicar, while she was writing Jane Eyre. Many of the locations mentioned in her novel match locations in Hathersage, the name Eyre being that of a family of the local gentry. Her "Thornfield Hall" is accepted as being based on North Lees Hall, on the outskirts of the village.
