The Qixi Festival: girls in the so-called "Han costume"

The 22nd of August 2023 is the seventh day of the seventh month in the traditional Chinese calendar, an ancient festival for girls called "Qixi" or "Begging for Handicrafts". However, in China, the ancient tradition had been forgotten for a long time, and the festival is not a public holiday. In fact, no one cared about it for decades.

In the last decade or so, however, influenced by the Japanese Tanabata (Japanese version of Qixi), Chinese young people have envied and begun to imitate the Japanese Tanabata practice to invent their own Qixi practice. Also has the Chinese business community revived the festival, hyping it up as China's version of Valentine's Day, a consumer festival in the name of love.

The two girls in the photo were wearing "Hanfu", the so-called traditional clothing of the Han Chinese that was invented in the last decade or so as a counterpart to the kimono, which is essentially a product of Chinese cultural nationalism. They were wearing trainers and carrying a satchel or a handbag, perhaps with traditional-style shoes in them, to replace the trainers on appropriate occasions for full-body photographs. With their smartphones for selfies, they were walking in a new park on the south bank of the Suzhou Creek, where there were very few pedestrians due to the heat, mostly couriers or delivery men on scooters passing by.
