This is a species of flowering plant in the bean family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers. In many tropical parts of the world it is grown as an ornamental tree and in English it is given the name royal poinciana or flamboyant. It is also one of several trees known as "flame tree".

This species was previously placed in the genus Poinciana, named for Phillippe de Longvilliers de Poincy, the 17th century governor of Saint Christophe (Saint Kitts). It is a non nodulating legume.Delonix regia, popularmente conocida como malinche, ponciana framboyán, flamboyán, árbol de fuego (El Salvador), flamboyant o acacia (en Venezuela) es una especie de la familia de las fabáceas.
Es uno de los árboles más coloridos del mundo por sus flores rojas, anaranjadas, un tono lila y un follaje verde brillante.

Flamboyant no Brasil e está por todos os lados. Dá alegria e cor às paisagens do país. Impossível não vê-las já de longe. Muito bonitas e chama muito a atenção. Tem também as amarelas, menos comuns. As vermelhas são mais presentes.
