Giant Termite House (nest) in the Amazonia, Bergendal, Suriname

            SN/NC: Nasutitermes Coniger, Termitidae Family

Huge house (or nests) of termites glued in a relatively small and fragile tree -- some of the surprises that the Amazon jungle offers to the visitor that has a focus on interesting things. Impressive! Nasutitermes corniger is a species of arboreal termite that is endemic to the neotropics. It is very closely related to Nasutitermes ephratae. The species has been studied relatively intensively, particularly on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. These studies and others have shown that the termite interacts with many different organisms including a bat that roosts in its nest and various species of ants that cohabit with the termite.

Casa de Cupins num tronco da Floresta Amazonica. Em Bergendal, Brokopondo, Suriname. Isoptera é uma ordem a qual engloba os cupins que são insetos eussociais (baratas sociais). São denominados termites ou cupins (no Brasil), térmite ou térmita (em Portugal), salalé (em Angola) e muchém (em Moçambique). Com cerca de 2 800 espécies catalogadas no mundo, esses insetos são notórios pelos prejuízos econômicos que causam como pragas de madeira e de outros materiais celulósicos, ou ainda como pragas agrícolas, apesar de apenas cerca de 10% das espécies conhecidas de cupim possuir estas características. Existe mais cupins em um hectare de terra numa floresta brasileira como a amazonica que em toda Europa e America do Norte juntas.

Las termitas son insectos típicos de los Climas tropicales y especialmente en florestas con muchas lluvias tienen una reproducción violentamente rápida y son voraces destruyéndose rápidamente todo que es madera, dando siempre preferencia a las muertas o palos caídos pero también se anidan con mucha frecuencia en Los Altos de los árboles y las atacan de tal forma que pueden tumbar rápidamente a las más fuertes que existan en la mata. También atacan las casas.  Son implacables.  Y como todo, también tienen Su belleza y viven en colonias, tal como las abejas y hormigas.  Aquí un ejemplar de como pueden construir sus nidos con gran habilidad de “ingeniería ambiental’ con gran equilibrio completando la impresionante belleza única de la floresta amazónica.
