Okra (also known as gumbo), is a tall-growing, warm-season, annual vegetable from the same family as hollyhock, rose of Sharon and hibiscus or cotton. The immature pods are used for soups, canning and stews or as a fried or boiled vegetable. The hibiscus like flowers and upright plant (3 to 6 feet or more in height) have ornamental value for backyard gardens.

Okra (ook bekend als gumbo), is een langgroeiende, warme seizoensgroente uit dezelfde familie als stokroos, roos van Sharon en hibiscus of katoen. De onrijpe peulen worden gebruikt voor soepen, conserven en stoofschotels of als gebakken of gekookte groente. De hibiscusachtige bloemen en rechtopstaande plant (3 tot 6 voet of meer in hoogte) hebben een sierwaarde voor achtertuinen.

El quimbombó, quingombó, gombo, molondrón, ocra, okra o bamia, Abelmoschus esculentus, es una fanerógama tropical de fruto comestible, originaria de África y perteneciente a la familia de las malváceas. En México se le llama también abelmosco.

O quiabeiro (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench: anteriormente, Hibiscus esculentus L.) é uma planta da família da malva (Malvaceae). Possui origem africana. Seu fruto, conhecido como quiabo, quingombô, gombô, quibombô, quigombó, quibombó, quimbombô, quingobó, quingombó e quingombô, é uma cápsula fibrosa cônica verde e peluda, cheia de sementes brancas redondas, muito usado em culinária antes da maturação, pois, próximos à maturação, endurecem. Suas folhas são lobadas. As flores são axilares, isto é, brotam a partir das gemas axilares.
