Mirna (Stranger #17/100) - a photo on Flickriver

I was walking along the Korenlei in Ghent, Belgium, which is a touristic hot spot, when I saw two girls making pictures of each other with their phones. They immediately drew my attention. I did not want to interrupt their photoshoot, so I waited for a few minutes. As the photoshoot continued, I decided to move on, following my usual tour and searching for strangers to photograph. Luckily, I did not find anyone else. 10 minutes later I was back at the Korenlei and ran into the girls who were done shooting. I introduced myself, explained the “100 Strangers” project, and asked if I could take their portrait. Both girls immediately agreed to be photographed. The girls, Mirna and Madonna, introduced themselves as sisters. They were born in Egypt and have lived in the UK for most of their lives. The sisters are in Ghent for a city-trip. Madonna is interested in photography but hasn’t yet found the time to pursue it seriously.

The selected pictures are taken with a very shallow depth of field, specifically f/2.2 and f/2. I attempted to make some more pictures with a larger depth of field, f/11, but was not satisfied with the results. Since it was early in the afternoon, the harsh sunlight and sidelighting caused one half of the face to be overly bright, while the other half was in too much shadow.
