SJ1_9215 -The Charm Bracelet - a photo on Flickriver

            The Circle Sculpture aka 'The Charm Bracelet' on the Cleveland Way, on Hunt Cliff, Saltburn, North Yorkshire, UK.

Created in 1990 by sculptor Richard Farrington, the charms on the bracelet represent aspects of local life: a Cleveland Bay horse, a starfish, a cat after Cat Nab, a pigeon to celebrate the local pastime of pigeon fancying, a Mermaid, a Mermaid’s Purse (the egg case of the Dog Fish) and a Thor’s Hammer representing the Viking settlement of the area.
The Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway operated from 1871 to 1958. A section at the northern end was reopened in the 1970s to serve Skinningrove steel rolling mills and the potash mine at Boulby, and can be seen to the left of the photo.
The Cleveland Way and England Coast Path here traverse the clifftop perilously close to the edge.
Also, framed by the sculpture is The Guibal Fanhouse. The Fanhouse is the only visible evidence of the Huntcliff Ironstone mine (1872 -1906). Stale air in the mine tunnels was drawn up from the mineshaft, into the fan mechanism and out of the chimney. Fresh air was drawn in at the mine’s entrance. The fan was 9 metres in diameter and revolved at 49 rpm, and was driven by a steam engine. Designed by a Belgian, it replaced previous ways of ventilating the tunnel shafts such as lighting fires to create an updraft, or the digging of large numbers of vertical shafts.
The building now has protected status as an Ancient Monument
