RD26802(vid). FFESTINIOG & WELSH HIGHLAND RAILWAYS, PORTHMADOG HARBOUR STATION.

Two visiting engines for the Ffestiniog Railway Society’s 2024 AGM Weekend were a pair of TINY Decauville 0-4-0 tanks. One was CHUQUITANTA and the other was LILY, both from the private Richmond Light Railway in Kent.

CHUQUITANTA was built by in Belgium by Couillet, in 1885 for Enrique Ayulo & Cie who ran it on the Rodriguez sugar cane plantation in Peru. It was called CHUQUITANTA because of its its small size and weight which is only 3.5 tons. It was brought to the UK from Peru for full restoration in 2004 and returned to steam in 2016. CHUQUITANTA is the world’s oldest surviving Decauville in operation.

LILY was built by Decauville in 1912 for the Thessalian Railways in Greece and came to the U.K. in 2023. She is the world’s youngest surviving Decauville in operation.

For the line-up on the Friday evening at Porthmadog Harbour Station they were joined by F&WHR resident ‘Alice’ class Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST FELINHELI of 1886.

Unfortunately, the weather that evening was somewhat less than cooperative!
