Background/history: The Alfetta GTV is a fastback coupé version designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro based on the Alfetta Berlina (4-porte/4-doors saloon).
The Alfetta GT was introduced in 1974, initially available only with the 1.8-litre (1,779 cc) version of the Alfa DOHC four.
These engines featured a chain driven 8-valve twin overhead cam cylinder head of cross-flow design. 

For 1976 the Alfetta 2000 GTV with 2.0-litre engine (1'962 cc) was launched.
At the same time the Alfetta GT became a range, also available with the 1.6-litre (1,570 cc) as the Alfetta GT 1.6 and Alfetta GT 1.8 with 1'779 cc as before. 
The GTV designation was initially reserved for the 2.0-litre top version.
