Take a detour, Highland cattle roadblock

The grazers keep a cool head at the North Holland Dune Reserve between Bergen and Wijk aan Zee. The optimum temperature for the Highland cattle is around 4 ° C. They also searched the water and adapted their behavior to suit the hot weather. With this hot weather its very hard for Highland cattle. These cattle are from the Scottish climate where summers are much milder in general. Their thick fur is particularly adapted to the harsh winters there. The warm weather causes the animals to adapt their activities. Grazing now is mainly at the beginning and at the end of the day instead. The rest of the day they spend in the shade or they stand up to their waists in water. Highland cattle also known as Hairy Coo or Heilan Coo are an ancient Scottish breed of beef cattle with long outward spreading horns and long wavy pelts coloured black, brindled, red or yellow. The breed was developed in the Scottish Highlands and western coastal regions of Scotland, and breeding stock has been exported to the rest of the world, especially Australia and North America, since the 1900s and is used as grazer in nature reserves. An adult bull weighs 800 kg. Highland cattle can be up to eighteen years old. It can bring up to fifteen calves in the world during her life. The Highland cattle has a friendly character so the animal is not dangerous for the hiker. However, one should always be careful with these half-wild animals, especially when there are calves.

The village Wijk aan Zee offers the combination of old fashioned cosiness with a peaceful ambiance of the dunes and the wide beach. Wijk aan Zee is surrounded by an extensive dune area crossed by a number of bicycle paths and walking trails. On our trail to the beach we met these Highland cattle who block our path to the beach.

In het Noordhollands Duinreservaat tussen Bergen en Wijk aan Zee houden de grazers het hoofd koel. Voor de Schotse Hooglanders ligt de optimale temperatuur rond de 4 °C. Ook zij zochten het water op en pasten hun gedrag aan aan het warme weer. De Schotse Hooglanders en Galloways hadden het misschien wel het zwaarst in dit warme weer. Deze rassen zijn afkomstig uit het Schotse klimaat waar de zomers over het algemeen een stuk milder zijn. Hun dikke vacht is vooral aangepast aan de strenge winters daar. Het warme weer zorgt ervoor dat de dieren hun activiteiten aanpassen. Grazen vindt nu vooral aan het begin en aan het einde van de dag plaats. De rest van de dag brengen ze door in de schaduw of staan ze tot hun middel in het water. Een volwassen stier weegt 800 kilo en een koe 500 kilo. Schotse hooglanders kunnen tot wel achttien jaar oud worden. En in die tijd kan een koe tot wel vijftien kalveren ter wereld brengen. De Schotse Hooglander heeft een vriendelijk karakter waardoor het dier voor de recreant niet gevaarlijk is. Wel moet men altijd voorzichtig omgaan met deze half-wilde dieren, met name als er kalveren zijn. Nergens toont het duinlandschap zo overtuigend zijn schoonheid als bij Wijk aan Zee. En dat is vooral te danken aan het decor op de achtergrond. Als een monsterlijke draak braakt Tata Steel vlammen en rookwolken uit. Terwijl je de ingewanden van het beest hoort rammelen van de honger. Wat is een duinroos in volle bloei dan onuitsprekelijk mooi. Een dorpje met een heel eigen en niet makkelijk te duiden karakter. Beetje kunstenaars, paar Polenpensions, Heliomare en eens per jaar piekt het IQ per vierkante meter naar recordhoogte tijdens het internationale schaaktournooi. Verder is het gewoon een heerlijk vriendelijk dorp waar mensen elkaar nog begroeten en de fietsen niet eens op slot staan.
