Black Panther Cleaver addresses AU students: 1968

Cleaver was a candidate for president at the time on the Peace & Freedom Party ticket. He would later flee to Cuba and then Algeria as a result of charges stemming from an alleged ambush of Oakland, CA police officers.

Cleaver was expelled from the Panthers in 1971 over a dispute over the future of the group and Cleaver’s belief that armed struggle should be implemented for the liberation of U.S. black people.

While in exile, Cleaver would turn toward Christianity and later other religions including the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints and Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s campus ministry as well as his own Christian/Muslim blend.

He became a Republican and denounced his former comrades, but became addicted to cocaine and was arrested for burglary. He died in ill health in 1998.

The Panthers maintained a small chapter in Washington, D.C. but prominent Panther leaders including David Hilliard, Huey Newton, Elbert “Big Man” Howard, Donald Cox, Eldridge Cleaver, and Kathleen Cleaver all made public appearances in the city.
