Ribblehead Viaduct from The Dales Way.

            Wednesday Walk.

Started the day dull and 'Dreek' and got steadily worse! The rain started just as we climbed up to the Limestone Ridge at High Birkwith.
Managed a few images before the camera went back into the rucksack, but not a day for photography! 

At 32 metres high and 400 metres long, with 24 arches, the  Ribblehead Viaduct is a magnificent feat of Victorian engineering. It forms part of the Settle-Carlisle line, built by the Midland Railway Company between 1870 and 1874 in a bid to gain a share of the lucrative Anglo-Scottish market.
Between one and two thousand men worked on this viaduct alone, to cross the infamous Batty Moss.
These workers were known as navvies, or navigators, a term originally used to describe the gangs of men that dug out canals and river navigations across Britain in the 18th century.
These navvies lived in  "Wild West" settlements, somewhere around the Blea Moor sidings and other sites with names including 'Sebastopol' 'Jericho'  and 'Batty Wife Hole' Many of them, and their families, are buried in the local chapel graveyard at Chapel-le-Dale.
