De morpho leeft in de tropische regenwouden van Midden- en Zuid-Amerika, met name in Costa Rica.

Dankzij zijn spectaculaire verschijning is de morpho van oudsher een gewild verzamelobject. Indianen vingen hem al voor hun erendienst en maakten maskers, amuletten en sieraden van de vleugels. Later werd het ook in Europa mode om de vlinder als exotische souvenir mee te nemen of er kunstvoorwerpen van te maken. Daarom is de vlinder nu beschermd.

De blauwe vleugels van de morpho reflecteren het zonlicht, waardoor deze vlinders al van ver te zien zijn. Op deze manier communiceren morpho’s met elkaar. Meestal hebben ze hun vleugels dicht. Ze laten dan de bruine kant van hun vleugels zien, zodat ze minder opvallen voor mogelijke roofdieren.

The morpho lives in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America, especially in Costa Rica.

Thanks to its spectacular appearance, the morpho is traditionally a sought-after collector's item. Indians already welcomed him for their honorary service and made masks, amulets and jewelery from the wings. Later in Europe it became fashionable to take the butterfly as an exotic souvenir or make art objects out of it. That is why the butterfly is now protected.

The blue wings of the morpho reflect the sunlight, so that these butterflies can be seen from afar. This way morphos communicate with each other. Usually they have their wings closed. They then show the brown side of their wings, so they are less noticeable for possible predators.
