La calidad de su traza hacen pensar en que fuera proyectada por un maestro conocedor de las técnicas constructivas del gótico francés. Posteriormente, se añadieron elementos, como la torre de la fachada sur y algunas estructuras menores, en el siglo XVI. El remate de la torre y la capilla cuadrada del ábside datan del XVII, la casa del sacristán del XVIII y la capilla de San José de finales del XIX.

Tenía tres portadas de las que en la actualidad se conservan dos. La principal, en la fachada oeste, posee un gran arco apuntado abocinado mediante tres arquivoltas y guardapolvo. Las arquivoltas se sustentan en dos cuerpos de soportes, el superior con columnillas y el inferior con arcos apuntados. La segunda puerta, denominada de los Hombres, se construyó en el siglo XVIII y es de estilo clasicista. En el ábside, destacan exteriormente las capillas que se abren en la girola, con amplios ventanales apuntados. Llama la atención en todo el exterior, los arbotantes que descargan las tensiones de los muros en gruesos contrafuertes. Estos son rematados por dobles pináculos unidos por una balaustrada que estilizan todo el edificio. En el interior, cubierto con bóvedas de crucería, destaca la nave central que dispone de tres pisos: el primero con arcadas, comunes a las naves laterales, el segundo con triforio y arcos ciegos y el tercero con grandes ventanales. Los pilares característicos de esta iglesia son circulares, con columnas adosadas, a excepción de los que sustentan las torres que son más complejos y voluminosos. En el siglo XVI se reforzaron los pilares de la nave central mediante arcos en voladizo. La girola está constituida por la prolongación de las naves laterales, con tres capillas radiales poligonales sin absidiolo. La escultura monumental de la iglesia es rica y variada, localizándose en portadas, capiteles, cornisas, gárgolas, etc., predominando los motivos vegetales de tradición cisterciense, aunque también aparecen figuras de animales, de monstruos y figuras humanas, algunas de notable calidad. En el interior del templo se conservan algunas piezas de gran de interés, como un Cristo gótico en madera policromada a tamaño natural, de principios del XIV, una Virgen de piedra policromada a tamaño natural de finales del siglo XIII o principios del XIV, un Cristo yacente atribuido a Gregorio Fernández o a su taller, y algunas piezas de platería de gran calidad. Entre los retablos destaca el del Santo Cristo, de estilo prechurrigueresco, que posee un lienzo de Zurbarán en su centro. En el Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid se conserva una lauda sepulcral de bronce, la de Martín Fernández de las Cortinas, de estilo flamenco, del XV.
