Things of Beauty Burn

Thankfully, nothing is actually burning here. In the Great Smoky Mountains, clouds form seemingly at random; this one rolled into my shot about 20 minutes before sunset. The glow through the trees looks like smoke, but it's just the sunlight burning through the vapor.

Just minutes before, the weather was mostly clear and I had set up everything for some happy sunset photography. But when I looked over my shoulder there was a significant cloud rolling down from the peak of Clingman's Dome. I thought the opportunity was lost, but could not have been more wrong. The cloud drifted down the mountain, and the shots I took throughout the next 20 minutes are some of the best photography of my life so far. You will see more shots from this sequence in the coming months.
