Approaching Stainmore Summit. - a photo on Flickriver

            Walking the old rail bed of the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway or the Stainmore Railway as it's sometimes called, that crossed the Pennines taking coke at first and then passengers to the West coast. Here the railbed runs parallel to the A66 through the Stainmore Gap.. The line was closed in 1962 and the wonderful viaduct over the River Belah demolished soon after.
The walk from Kirkby Stephen to the summit is one of the great excursions of Cumbria, unfortunately not all on rights of way. A trick was missed not turning this stunning route into a national footpath when it became surplus to requirements.
