Collectormania 9, at Middleton Hall, thecentre:mk, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England, United Kingdom, on Friday 28th April 2006.
About the photograph.
This is the American actress and author, Katherine Kiernan Maria Mulgrew.
She was born on April 29, 1955 in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Her father was a contractor and her mother was an artist and painter. She was the second of eight children, and born with a full set of teeth. This was later used as a title for her autobiography titled Born with Teeth: A Memoir published in 2015.
Her early careers during 1975 to 1994 included many movies and television episodes, including Ryan’s Hope, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, and Mrs. Columbo to name a few.
Starting from 1994, she got her famous break when she was cast as Captain Kathryn Janeway in the third Star Trek spin-off called Star Trek: Voyager.
The first photo, file 0001 was taken with a Minolta X-700 35mm film SLR camera and a telephoto lens, possibly the 80-200mm f4.5 zoom, when I was waiting for my turn to meet her at a fan convention.
Sadly I have no idea which roll of film I used, more likely to be either Kodak which is my preferred choice or Afga which is my secondary choice, depending on availability of stock.
The second photo, file 0004 was taken with my Olympus Camedia C-3040Z, as I was the next customer, and stepped forwards for my turn to get her autograph.
You may be wondering what she is doing in the second photo. So I’ll tell the story about it.
That day was the 28th April, and I read somewhere on the Internet that her birthday is due the next day on the 29th. So I got her a small simple birthday card, nothing fancy, just a normal Happy Birthday card. I gave it to her, and she was pleased with it, then process to sign a print (seen on the bottom of the photo).
At that time, the queue was really long, and busy. So at moments like this, the event’s showrunners or her own personal assistant, maybe her agent, put up a notice on the wall, out of frame, that would say something like NO POSED PHOTOGRAPHS.
That is supposed to imply that fans who get to meet her, can take photos of her, but there is no time for the fans to pose with her for a selfie. Just meet her, get her autograph, and move on. The rules did not imply not allowed to take quick photos of her while waiting for her to do the autographing.
When she finished autographing for me, she was like “Wait a minute.” That’s her facial expression, telling me to hold on.
I thought I was in trouble for taking photos of her, but it turned out that she wanted me to wait a moment, while she talks to one of the event’s staff. She asked someone to help take my camera, and take a photo of her and myself posing together. (The security guy with the tie in the background, did also ended up being seen in the photo of Kate and myself!)
That was a wonderful moment for me.
About the event and the location.
Collectormania is one of the British range of fan conventions run by Showmasters, a company set up in 2002. Showmasters started out with just three people on full time, and a dozen others during show weekends, but grew to become an office full of people working all year around, with as much as up to 350 crew members making events happen. Their other fan conventions include London Film & Comic Con, among the many other events.
The Central Milton Keynes shopping centre, previously known as thecentre:mk or now simply as centre:mk, is made of two adjacent shopping centres, the original shopping centre that opened in 1979 and the Midsummer Place that opened in 2000, in the middle of the largest town.
