Bleichenfleet (In Explore 2.5.22) - a photo on Flickriver

Die Hamburger Fleete sind zum Teil aus den Mündungsarmen von Alster und Bille in die Elbe hervorgegangen, die dann zur Entwässerung und als Stadtgräben zur Verteidigung genutzt wurden; zum anderen Teil wurden sie als weitere Überlaufgräben der später aufgestauten Alster angelegt. Schließlich dienten die Fleete zunehmend dem Warenverkehr.
The Hamburger Fleete emerged in part from the mouths of the Alster and Bille into the Elbe, which were then used for drainage and as city ditches for defense; on the other hand, they were created as further overflow ditches of the Alster, which was later dammed. Finally, the canals were increasingly used for the movement of goods.
