Matera (Italy), Chiesa di S. Francesco d'Assisi - Church of Saint Francis of Assisi.

                 La chiesa di San Francesco D'Assisi si affaccia su un'ampia piazza sotto la quale si estende una interessante area archeologica, nel corso del medioevo quest'area fu utilizzata come luogo di sepoltura.
    La prima costruzione dedicata a San Francesco d'Assisi, risale al 1200 e venne realizzata su un nucleo ipogeo dedicato ai Santi Pietro e Paolo, che ancora oggi può essere visitato passando attraverso una botola collocata all'interno dell'attuale chiesa.
    La facciata ha assunto l'odierna conformazione nel Settecento e rappresenta un ulteriore esempio di stile barocco.   

    The church of San Francesco D'Assisi overlooks a large square under which there is an interesting archaeological area, during the Middle Ages this area was used as a burial place.
The first building dedicated to San Francesco d'Assisi dates back to 1200 a.C. and was built on an underground nucleus dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, which can still be visited today by passing through a trap door located inside the current church.
The facade took on its current shape in the eighteenth century and represents a further example of Baroque style.
