A Victorian extension further extended.

            Originally an extension to Hanley Town Hall (which sits to its left), the red brick facade of the Victoria Hall was conceived by Borough Surveyor, J. Lobely, and completed in 1888 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
This concert hall has grade II listed status and sits on Bagnall Street at its junction with John Street and Lidice way, close to the town centre of Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent and was originally designed to seat 2800 people. It held a wide variety of concerts and was noted for its acoustic qualities.
I spent many an hour watching bands perform here over the years, along with the Saturday night wrestling contests (theatrics) I watched as a youngster.
The modern extension was added in 1998 as part of a revitalization of the city centre and the development of the "Cultural Quarter" in Hanley.
It was designed by Levitt Bernstein Architects to give better access, especially for the disabled, enhanced catering, bar and backstage facilities at a cost of £8m.
It won the Architects' Journal/Bovis Royal Academy Awards in 1997 and was nominated for and was a finalist in the Civic Trust Awards 2000. The recent update has been heralded as a nationally important example of a sympathetic marriage of  new styling to an old building without diminishing the older architecture.
The street sign for Boothroyd Street on the side of the old Victoria Hall used to run through to the old Hanley Public Baths on Lichfield Street.
