Palmer Park: Merrill Fountain--Detroit MI

            The Merrill Fountain sits as a sad reminder of the deterioration of the city of Detroit. Built in 1901 to honor lumber baron Charles Merrill, it was located in the Campus Martius area downtown. As that part of the city became more crowded, it was moved to Palmer Park in 1925.

The park was named after Thomas Palmer, the husband of Mr. Merrill's grand-daughter, Lizzie Merrill Palmer. Weeds grow in the main pool and several balusters are missing. Perhaps some civic-minded soul will underwrite the fountain's rehabilitation. The marble fountain, in the Italian Renaissance style,  was designed by the New York City firm of Carrere and Hastings
