Welmon - a photo on Flickriver

Welmon

            November 8, 2007 - New Orleans, LA.  Welmon Sharlehorn is a local artist, with his work being shown around the world in a number of notable museums, including the Smithsonian.  He learned his craft, using a pen on any piece of paper he could find, in prison over 20+ years, part of it spent in Angola.  Since Katrina he's been, for the most part, homeless.  Behind him is the home of an actress, who is one of the kind New Orleaneans, who has given him a confortable place to sleep, in this case, on the porch behind him.

It seems unacceptable that some of the most creative people - be they artists, poets, musicians, performance artists, dancers, actors - in New Orleans...  in the United States...  in the world... should be forsaken or forgotten simply because it's not commercialable to Lowest Common Denomonator sensibilities.

If you wish to help Welmon to get on his feet, I plan to post a link on which you may contact him as an artist available for commission, or to offer assistance or donate to his cause to continue producing artwork, as well as being a much loved, valued, and productive member of our community.
