Tupolev SB bomber over Spain - a photo on Flickriver

When the Spanish Civil War began, Russia sent large quantities of these bombers to help the Republican Air Force and they quickly gained a reputation of invulnerability since they were far faster than the Nationalists Fiat CR.32 and Heinkel He-51 fighters.

In 1937, two Tupolevs attacked by mistake the German Pocket Battleship Deutschland killing 31 men from the crew. Hitler then ordered the bombing of the city of Almeria by the Pocket Battleship Admiral Scheer in retaliation.

Eventually, the Nationalists developed tactics to deal with these planes and the arrival of the much more advanced Bf-109 fighter ended the supremacy of the Tupolev SBs. Some were captured at the end of the war and used as trainers until the lack of spare parts forced their removal from service.
