Mum and Baby

I stayed a night at a caravan park on the mid-south coast of New South Wales in Australia and early next morning I was looking out the window just in time to see three kangaroos hopping past. Kangaroos often come into the towns and caravan parks as the grass is sweeter than the courser varieties found in the bush.

Later whilst eating my breakfast, I was standing outside watching the kangaroos and the sunrise when I noticed this kangaroo about 50 metres away in the opposite direction. I used my camera to confirm she did indeed have a joey with her.

When mum bends down to feed, joey is able to reach the grass to also feed and mum actually has three strands of grass hanging from her mouth. These are wild kangaroos and the chain-link fence in the background marks the boundary between the caravan park and the neighboring industrial property.

It takes about 6-months before a joey leaves its mother's pouch for the first time and by the time it is 8-months old it has grown too big and it is time to finally vacate its mother’s pouch for good. This joey must be approaching the 'leave home stage' as it also has one leg hanging out of the pouch. Even though a joey has left the pouch it will continue to suckle until about 12-months of age.
