Redtail lunch

            Apparently red-tailed hawks are not above chowing down on road kill. This poor possum was hit the night before on Senate Street, 1.5 blocks from where I live. As I was walking toward the MLK rally this morning, there it was, in "pristine" condition. When I came back about noon, it had 2 vultures attached to it, along with this waiting hawk, and the possum had been opened up surgically. The buzzards flew up onto a telephone pole when I approached...the hawk came back for some more. I ended up walking up to the scene: I could have reached out and touched the hawk. I did pull the possum away...the hawk made a little wing flap and road, but flew up onto a parking meter...and I pulled the possum (by the tail) onto the curb, where hopefully nobody would get hit during the rest of the picnic.
