From "The Naked Portrait" series. There is something special in the look of a head-and-shoulders portrait taken when naked – often this can be missed because the viewer naturally wants to take in the whole view. I am therefore making a series of "naked portraits", cropped from original nude photos, which can also be flagged "safe" so they can be seen by a wider range of people. For some of them (including this one) the full frame has been archived and is no longer on display.

Marie during her second pregnancy in 1982. We had moved back to London from Brighton and it was another hot summer when Marie was pregnant with our third daughter. Again, she stayed very active all the way through – necessary as I was working all hours (no paternity leave in those days) and the twins were lively 5-year-olds.

This is a snap of her relaxing in our bedroom with the windows open but curtains closed to keep cool, taken soon after this one. It was a Saturday and I think she was pleased that I was going to take the girls out for a bicycle ride in the park so she could have some peace and quiet...

Tech note: taken on an Olympus OM2n + 100mm F2.8 Zuiko using Kodachrome and converted to B&W.
