L'ethnie Yi est l'une des deux principales ethnies présentes sur les marchés de la région de Yuanyang,

Les Yi constituent une des 56 minorités reconnues par le gouvernement central chinois. Ils se désignent eux-mêmes par des noms différents selon les différents groupes mais l’état chinois les considère comme une ethnie unique. Au nombre d’environ 8 millions, ils sont la 6e minorité de Chine par ordre  d’importance. Les Yi, qui vivent habituellement dans des régions montagneuses, parlent une langue tibéto-birmane, le yi, dont il existe de nombreuses variétés .
Ils possèdent des ancêtres communs avec les peuples tibétain, naxi et qiang actuels Ces ancêtres ont émigré depuis le sud-est du Tibet jusqu’au Sichuan et la province du Yunnan, où la majorité de leur population réside maintenant
Les Yi pratiquent une forme d’animisme sous la direction d'un prêtre chaman mais leur religion inclut également beaucoup d'éléments du taoïsme et du bouddhisme. (Synthèse d’après Wikipedia)
