PLAIN CHACHALACA Ortalis vetula. A small group of Plain Chachalacas was located in low trees near the abandoned airstrip in the center of Tikal National Park, home of towering Mayan Temples hidden in extensive tall tropical forest in the Departamento del Petén in northern Guatemala on the morning of March 4, 2004. The two individuals in the foreground are engaging in allopreening or allogrooming in which one bird preens or grooms another.

Plain Chachalacas belong to the neotropical family Cracidae (Guans, Curassows, and Chachalacas) and are found from extreme southern Texas to northwestern Costa Rica. They are highly social birds and are frequently found in groups. The common name Chachalaca derives from the wonderful, distinctive vocalizations of these birds which frequently call in chorus in a loud, raucous manner.

Un grupo de Chachalacas Oliváceas Ortalis vetula se halló en unos árboles bajos cerca de la abandonada pista de aterrizaje en el centro del Parque Nacional Tikal, sitio de los imponentes Templos Mayas ocultados en alto bosque tropical en el Departamento de Petén en el norte de Guatemala. Las dos aves en el primer plano están arreglandose las plumas, una a la otra, por la mañana el 4 de marzo de 2004.
