Crosstown Traffic

            33064 uses the critical north to south freight artery a few miles to the west of London while working 6m91, the 0920 Sheerness to Willesden ‘Speedlink’ working.

The train is conveying two distinct traffics: at the front of the train are 6 continental ferry vans, which would have travelled via the Dunkirk to Dover train ferry and then to Hoo Junction in North Kent. At the rear are a set of empty bogie scrap carriers, running from the Co-Steel Electric Arc Furnace steelworks at Sheerness and heading for scrapyards for reloading.

To the right is part of London Underground’s Lillie Bridge depot, which was built by the Metropolitan District Railway in 1871. In 1962 the eastern side of the site was dedicated to maintenance of the Underground’s fleet of battery locomotives, a number of which can be seen here.

The line in the lower right corner is the Underground’s District line: heading towards me is the branch to Kensington Olympia, whereas the mainline west to Richmond and Ealing Broadway.
