            On the right we have Private Eric Church, Royal Army Service Corps, with an unidentified colleague at Buitenzorg, Java (now Bogor, Indonesia), 19th June 1946. 

This is another family album scan, of a 3x2 inch print. Eric was my father in law and was called up in early 1943. He spent his first year learning how to drive and then was based in South Wales. In early 1944 he shipped out to India and joined the 14th Army in Burma. Following the Japanese surrender he was part of the British-Indian forces sent to Java (now Indonesia) in September 1945. Though mainly intended as a humanitarian intervention, repatriating Prisoners of War and internee’s, disarming and returning Japanese forces to Japan and maintaining order the Indonesian nationalists perceived the British-Indian force as paving the way for a return of the Dutch and made strenuous efforts at resistance. For the next year or so the British-Indian force was caught in the middle of the politics and strife between the Nationalists and Dutch whilst trying to remain neutral and retain order. Eric returned to the UK and was de-mobbed in late 1946, the British-Indian force left Java at the end of 1946 and Indonesia became independent in December 1949.
