142006 leads 150262 across the bridge from the “mainland” onto Barry Island with the 11:22, Aberdare – Barry Island service, 17th April 2010. To the right of the train on what is now a mix of car park and wasteland is the site of Woodham Brothers yard which on my previous visits to Barry from 1969 through to 1976 was packed with over two hundred withdrawn steam locomotives in various states of decay. It is pleasing to note that a lot of those decaying locomotives have now been restored.

Unit History
The class 142 (Pacer) was built by British Rail Engineering in Derby between 1985 and 1987. The train body is based on that of the Leyland National bus and many fixtures and fittings of the bus can be found on the trains. The class has a capacity of between 102 and 120 passengers per two-car set. Amazingly, for what was a cheap and nasty stopgap, these units are still going strong approaching twenty five years service with no real sign of replacement. 142006 was originally allocated to Newton Heath for suburban duties in the North West and I first saw this unit at Manchester Piccadilly on the 10th July 1987. It transferred to Cardiff in 2000.
